Math is like buttoning a shirt. Miss one button early and everything after it sits crooked, even when each step looks fine.

Why math falls apart in Grade 4 or 5

Math is like buttoning a shirt. Miss one button early and every button after it can look fine, but the whole shirt sits crooked.

A child who never quite got place value, or who still counts on their fingers to multiply, can keep up for a while. Then fractions, long division and multi-step word problems arrive, all of them built on those earlier pieces, and things start to collapse.

By then it rarely looks like a missing skill. It looks like "I'm bad at math." More practice on this year's work doesn't fix it. Going back to the missing piece does.

Signs a math gap started earlier

  • Was fine in Grade 2 or 3, struggling now
  • Gets the right answer one day and not the next
  • Can do the calculation but not the word problem
  • Still counts on fingers for multiplication or subtraction
  • Tests show a B, but you have a feeling something is off
  • Homework ends in tears or "I can't do this"

What math tutoring covers

Everything ties to the Ontario math curriculum for Grades 3 to 6, and to what your child's class is working on now.

Number sense

Place value, rounding, estimating, and knowing whether an answer makes sense.

Math facts

Addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts, learned so they stick rather than drilled until they fade.

Fractions and decimals

Usually where hidden gaps first show up. Eva makes them concrete before they become abstract.

Word problems

Reading the question, working out what it is asking, and choosing the operation. Often the real difficulty is the reading, not the math.

Multi-step problems

Keeping track of steps, checking work, and not giving up halfway through.

Math confidence

For children who panic, rush or shut down. Calm, steady progress they can see for themselves.

When math facts aren't automatic, every bigger problem costs a child extra effort, and that shows up as slowness, mistakes and frustration.

Why 8 x 7 matters more than it looks

Math facts are not about memorizing a table for a test. They are the tools every later step is built with. When they aren't automatic, a child spends so much effort on the small parts that there is nothing left for the actual problem.

Not more worksheets

Repetition helps once a skill is understood. It doesn't help when the foundation underneath is missing, and it can teach a child that math is something done to them.

Eva teaches the way a good classroom teacher does: she watches how your child thinks, finds where it breaks down, and teaches that piece until it holds. Then she connects it to the work your child is bringing home this week.

What a session looks like

  • A quick check on what stuck from last time
  • Focused work on the missing piece, with hands-on materials where they help
  • Applying it to this week's class work or homework
  • A short note to you on what to look for at home
